Yuma Used to Be Top Wedding Destination For Hollywood Couples

Many people may travel to the Grand Canyon state to get married and at one time the city of Yuma, Arizona, was a popular wedding destination for celebrities. The Yuma Sun recently dug up one of their newspaper articles from 1972, which revealed that Yuma used to be the marriage capital among Hollywood stars.

The first of the famous Hollywood couples to marry in Yuma was Loretta Young and Grant Withers, actors of the 1930s. The two were married by Justice of the Peace Earl A. Freeman, who later became known as the "The Marrying Judge" because of all the stars that he married who were in a hurry to be wed.

Some couples still find Yuma to be a happening place for marriage, however it’s important to realize that marriage licenses in Yuma County can only be issued through the Yuma County Clerk of Superior Court. So if you’re currently looking to get married in a hurry, make sure that you visit the Clerk’s office between 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

Once a marriage license is administered in Arizona, it is valid for up to one year from the date that it is issued.

Specific information about obtaining a marriage license in the Yuma area can be found through the Yuma County website. Arizona law requires that both parties getting married in the state be at least 18 years of age, unless parental consent is given for those that are 16 or 17 years of age. The cost of a marriage license in the state is $72.
